To bounce back from a disastrous Bar-B-Q debacle, Fritos aims to ride the green wave to spicy success.

Other snack brands have been experimenting with jalapeno hybrids, but original Fritos are such a basic flavor (more like a sea salt chip than a Cheeto) they’re crying out to be dressed up. Rather than try and reinvent the wheel, Fritos focused on delivering one simple flavor with good balance and high quality.

They succeeded. Where Bar-B-Q were salted almost beyond edibility, the Spicy Jalapeno flavor is subtle enough not to be overpowering, but spicy enough to satisfy. Like any good jalapeno the heat lingers on the tongue long after the chip. The taste notes are peppery and almost sweet, and the size and shape of classic Fritos makes for easy eating.

While jalapeño snacks are clearly the vogue this summer, let’s hope Fritos Spicy Jalapeno survive to become a supermarket staple.
