As pioneers in the artisanal chip space, Kettle brand enjoys a hard-earned reputation for strong flavors on thick, satisfying chips. Their extension into “Krinkle Cuts” – wavy, ridge-cut chips – makes perfect sense, and these are some of the heartiest chips you’ll find with no shortage of seasoning.
The Salt & Pepper installment of the Krinkle line is what you would expect – rich pepper on snappy, meaty potato wedges that are much chunkier than a comparable Ruffle. Across those peaks and valleys they’ve spread a generous layer of seasoning. These are big slices of potato baked with a lot of salt and pepper.
It’s easy to be boring with a salt and pepper chip, but Kettle has gone too far the other way. To make an interesting snack the temptation is to spread these basic flavors on thick, and that’s what Kettle has done, particularly with the fresh ground pepper. After half a bag the pepper starts to overwhelm the palate, and the saltiness really begins to bite. It isn’t unpleasant, but it’s not subtle. These are a good chip but be prepared for an intense experience.
